Light in the shade

pieris-japonica

Outside brushing snow from broadleaf evergreens, I was cheered to see the buds on this pieris. This shrub will top out at about eight to ten feet. Since I don’t have a conical evergreen in the front yard, this is the shrub which gets festooned with lights at Christmas time. I’ve switched to LED lights, because they stay cooler and last longer. No need for lights when the streamers of tiny white blossoms arrive in a few weeks.

Buried under the snow nearby are early bloomers, crocuses (see yesterday’s post) and hellebores. Hellebores are gorgeous, and I wonder why more gardeners don’t use them. I’ll show you when the snow melts.
